Morganton is the County Seat of Burke County, which is located in the foothills of western North Carolina. The City is intersected by I-40, US Highways 64 and 70, and NC Highways 18 and 181. Interstates 26, 77 and 85 are within a 50 mile radius. The Charlotte International Airport is just over an hour's drive from downtown -
The Heart of Morganton is its vibrant downtown filled with restaurants, galleries, shops, parks a movie theater, and more. Residents gather on the Historic Courthouse Square during spring and summer to enjoy free Friday night concerts, and CoMMA, the City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium, offers wonderful shows and theater productions.

More than 20 positions on various City advisory boards and commissions will expire at the end of June 2012, and the City Council wants to encourage residents to get involved. Member terms will expire on the following boards and commissions: the Cable Television Commission, the Community Appearance Advisory Commission, the Human Relations Commission, the Main Street Advisory Commission, the Planning & Zoning Commission, and the Recreation Advisory Commission.
