1. To access the proposed new Flood Maps go to www.webgis.net

2. Click on the drop down box at the top of page labeled "WebGIS Sites", Click on "North Carolina" then click on "Burke Co., NC". This will open the Burke County, NC web page.

3. Click on "ArcIMS GIS" label. Left Click and Drag a Zoom In Box over the green Morganton image on the large map. To the left hand side of the page you will see a box titled "Layers". Click on the boxes in the "Layers" table to turn on and off various layers of the map.

The layer labeled "Flood Zones" is the 1987 mapping. These areas show up as red on the map. The "Proposed Flood Zones" layer will show 3 different zone colors (Pink indicates Flood Way Areas or No Build Areas) (Green indicates 100 year flood zones) and (Blue represents 500 year flood zones). The red lines indicate 100 year flood elevations at that particular part of the stream.

You can zoom in and out of the map and use the pan tool to look at different parts of the City. It is recommended that you only turn on the following layers: (Parcels, Roads, Aerial Photography (2005) and Proposed Flood Zones)

This will enable you to see structures and property lines once you have zoomed in specific areas of town. You can search for specific parcels by hitting the "Search" button at the top of the page and following the directions on the search tool.

Hunting Creek, located in eastern Morganton and  Burke County, has been included on the “Impaired” waters listing for the State of North Carolina. Based on this listing, this study has been completed during the past two years (through a grant received by a local non-profit) to study in detail the issues associated with this impairment designation.
